Chapter 13

Sunny

The thing about being introduced to so many folks in one night was that, after a while, it began to require exactly zero effort on my end. There was a script I had unintentionally created for myself, and it went off flawlessly with every use.

“Mister or Miss So-and-so? It’s wonderful to meet you.”

“I am doing my best. Prime Academy definitely lives up to its reputation.”

“Yes, these are my mates. Sure, three can seem like a lot, but it feels entirely natural to us.”

“I also look forward to what the future holds. Yes, the pleasure is mine as well. Bye-bye, now.”

Rarely was I even given the opportunity to get through the whole thing. More often than not, the Otherworld elite had no interest in engaging in even the most polite small-talk with me and instead spoke exclusively to Callista. I wasn’t sure if the guests or Callista were more to blame for that, as the Sky Clan leader loved to steal the spotlight whenever possible. My mates and I had to continually suffer through her explanation that it had been her idea to arrange this visit, that she had done all the correspondence, and that she’d decided to make an event of it. Wasn’t that just grand? I swear, there wasn’t a sliver of humility in the woman. Even her little henchman, Orrville, acted as her personal hype-man, being sure to mention how exciting it had been to watch Callista come alive at the opportunity to do something so meaningful for the community.

My eyes had rolled so hard at that one I risked getting dizzy.

Community? I thought. This female doesn’t know a thing about the Otherworld community, just this weird bubble of money, power, and influence.

Besides, her story wasn’t even true—I’d blown her off for weeks and weeks until I was ready to come. All she had done was throw a stupid party and parade me around like a show dog to high-ranking members of her own clan, which, coincidentally, appeared to be the most massively represented clan in attendance.

Even Dexter, who had eaten, slept, and breathed Sky Clan his entire life, was sinking with embarrassment over this behavior. I could sense the disappointment radiating from him as he learned more and more about the reality of his own clan leader. As clever, cunning, and poised as she was, she was also selfish and entitled. The thunderbird let out a variety of sighs throughout the conversations and made a habit of clearing his throat whenever Callista was singing her own praises just to get under her skin. Judging by the daggers she regularly glared toward Dexter, I knew his subtle but poignant game was working exactly as it was intended.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of faking smiles, a short, plump satyr female found us in the crowd to let us know our table was prepared for us. Just like Elio had promised, we were finally going to be eating dinner during what we were told was going to be, you know, dinner.
